5 Fun Things Your Family Can Do To Welcome Spring (and Prep for Easter)

With longer days, (generally) warmer temperatures, and blooming flowers, springtime offers plenty of opportunities for families to have fun together. Help to welcome the season—and prepare for Easter—with these five boredom-busting crafts and activities.

1. Make a spring wreath or fabric tie banner.

A spring wreath is a beautiful way to welcome spring into your home. Rally the kids to gather natural materials like twigs, flowers, and greenery (see #3 below) or use unexpected materials like seed packets, egg cartons, and more. Look here for more inspiration.

Fabric tie banners are an inexpensive, colorful option that even the littlest hands can help to make. Purchase or repurpose fabric or ribbon in your favorite colors of the season. Cut the fabric into strips and tie them onto some twine or rope. Find photos and a tutorial here.

For even more seasonal festivity, add some Easter-themed décor (think miniature eggs, bunnies, and chicks) to your wreath or banner.

2. Plant a garden.

Spring is the perfect time to start a garden. Whether you have a large backyard or a small balcony, or room for just a container or tabletop garden, you can start some herbs, vegetables, or flowers to enjoy throughout the season. Get the whole family involved in deciding what to grow as well as digging, planting, and caring for the garden. It's a great way to teach kids about the environment and the plant life cycle. Consult some resources to figure out what (and when) to plant according to your region, like this helpful monthly gardening checklist.

To turn this into an Easter project, check out directions for creating an easy, inexpensive “resurrection garden” with supplies from the dollar store here. And here are instructions for two options using different types of greenery.

3. Go for a nature walk.

Take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days by going for a nature walk. Look for signs of spring, like blooming flowers and chirping birds. You can also collect some natural materials like sticks, leaves, and flowers to use in your crafts. Make sure to pack some water and snacks for everyone!

For those who like more structure or a little friendly competition, try doing a nature walk scavenger hunt. Use a template/guide to keep track as everyone hunts for colors, specific plants and wildlife, or even the sounds of spring. Find lots of free printables and ideas here.

4. Make spring-themed edible treats.

Spring is a perfect time for enjoying fresh, light, and colorful treats. For some easy and adorable ideas that kids will love, look here.
